Is it a good fit?

  • Ready if Your child can name a few things around the home.
  • Too much today? The Pre-K level: two things, each a picture with its name said.
  • Too easy? The Grade 1–2 level: the word first, the picture only after.

What your child practises

  • Naming things
  • Linking a picture to the real thing
  • Reading a word, then finding it (Grade 1–2)
Listen for
“Our basket is bigger!”

If your child says something like this, in their own words, the idea has landed. Finishing the rounds means they took part; this is the learning.

Your part

  • Say which rooms are fine to look in
  • Nothing to prepare

The full design

What it is

A picture from your child's storybooks, a thing that is found in many homes: a bed, a basket, a stool, a flower pot. Your child goes and looks for one in your home, comes back, and says whether it was there. Nothing is photographed and nothing about your home is kept.

How it goes

One thing at a time. Your child goes to look; the screen waits, with no clock and no Pet nudging an empty room. Back at the screen your child taps Found it! or We don't have one, and both move to the next thing: not every home has a stool. Drawn by the day from the cards marked as found at home, never the same card twice in a day; fewer when the library holds fewer (today it holds four: bed, basket, stool, pot), and under two it says so and offers nothing to find.

The Pet

Notices a find: "You found a basket!" Remembers the book it came from, when your child has finished it: "like the basket in Where Is My Other Sock?". Asks nothing while your child is away from the screen. Dares the next rung up, once.

By band

Pre-K: two things a play, each a picture with its name said aloud. K: three things, the picture and its word. 1–2: three things, the word first; the picture comes only when your child taps Show me, so the word is read before it is seen.

What it grows

Young children learn words best when the word, the picture and the real thing meet, and when they move to find it.

Done, and what counts as evidence

Done = every thing of the play answered, found or not. What was found is not kept (253 ruling 8): the game records that it was played, as every game does, and nothing else.

What's personal

The things are from your child's stories and the hunt is in your child's own home.
